Will Microsoft ever create a Handheld gaming device?

Recommended Posts

There is a lot of excitement and discussion around the Nintendo 3DS and PSP 2 at the moment, both offering great features while appealing to different audiences.

Microsoft manages to find room for themselves in the Gaming market with the Xbox and stole thunder with Kinect so do you think they observe closely the handheld gaming market, looking for opportunities?

I think a gaming device that had a similar interface to the WP7/Zune would work quite well.

Doubtful, when you can run games on WP7. Nintendo 3ds and PSP2 are great products, but in this day and age most people are moving away from the single use electronics and moving towards multi-use. If Microsoft did a portable xbox lets say, what would be different about it than WP7 and games?

I don't think they'll bother. They'd be far better off sticking with the existing software side of things and make games for already-established platforms. I don't think it's worth diluting the market for a meager share of things, when they could stick with how they are at the moment and stay strong.

Like others have said, why try and create a gaming device when you already have WP7? Apple made the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch their gaming devices with iOS. Microsoft's going for the same idea.

I don't think they could come out with enough to differentiate from the other devices. Now that the PSP2 has trophy support, online aware, all that stuf it has alot of the stuff that MS would have natrually included in a dedicated device. Simply releasing a copycat device and saying we have achievement support would only appeal to Xbox fans but not necessarily to a broader audience. Anyway the portable is popular here in the states but it is king over in Japan, a market that MS has shown a failure to penetrate in any fashion.

As a geek, I'd love to have a device ala the PSP2 in specs, that could play any video format known to man (yes mkv i mean you) and pretty much be the ultimate phone, gaming, entertainment device rolled into one. I know that's unlikely to happen anytime soon.
