I have an 8gb sandisk SDHC Card with a great deal of important information on it in the form of scanned documents. It suddenly and inexplicably got an io error can't read on it. What do I do?

Make sure the lock switch on it's side is unlocked. If the card got corrupted and the filesystem is not recognized anymore, you might want to try and mount it on a laptop that has Ubuntu on it. If that still doesn't work... out of ideas.

Thank you for your reply. Already checked lock switch on the side and it does not work either way. what is Ubuntu and why do you need a laptop? Would a desktop work as well?

Ubuntu is a linux distribution that has a GUI very similar to Windows, therefore should be easy to use for novices( like myself, for instance; I've been using it only for a few months and I have no issues with it). And yes, a desktop should work fine as well.
You can download and burn a bootable CD with Ubuntu on it and run it from the CD; that way, you don't need to install it on your computer, just select the CD-Rom as the first bootable device in BIOS.

Hi, friend this is a common problem generally people face related to their memory cards. So don't frustrate, if you have any backup then it is better for you but in case their is no backup then you have to use any third party sandisk card recovery software. I personally use this software for recovery of images from memory card and it works for me.
I hope you also get your scanned document back again with the help of recovery software.

Good Luck!

Your problem is really similar to a problem of my friend. In his case, his Samsung phone memory card became inaccessible after inserting. And the inner data also cannot be reached. Even though we still don’t what’s wrong with this card, we find a memory card recovery freeware recommended in a forum and try it to surprisingly retrieve all his data back. Therefore, I trust it will help you out, too. Give it a shot: http://blog4mark.blogspot.com/2012/12/sd-card-recovery.html
I hope it woks for you.
Good luck!
