The 2 TB Black has four 500 GB platters and is very fast. The 1 TB has 3 meaning the areal density of the 1 TB model at 333 GB per platter puts it at a disadvantage compared to the F3's 500 GB / platter models.

Of course that's changed, if I understand correctly the current WD Caviar Black has 2 500gb platters and a 64MB cache.
Other than that I have the same choice as the OP between the two drives - the noise is reportedly louder in the WD which is a concern.
