Uefa has indicated that it favours the introduction of a transfer window for the movement of players.

The recommendation is for two periods of activity a year. Under the proposal transfers would take place between:

• The end of the season and 31 August
• 1 January to 31 January

Football's governing body want the system to be adopted by European countries for transfers of players both internationally and domestically.

Uefa's executive committee outlined the idea after a meeting in Porto, Portugal, where Friday's European Championship draw is being held.

A statement from Uefa said: "The executive committee decided to recommend to Uefa's 51 member associations the adoption of harmonised transfer windows from 2002/03.

"This recommendation should be considered by each association before implementation."

However, European football's governing body has no power to force national associations to adopt the system for domestic transfers.

And Uefa chief executive Gehard Aigner acknowledged that it will be easier to implement in some countries than others.

The Football League in England is likely to be resistant to such a move.

Meanwhile, Uefa has announced Team Marketing AG has won an extension to their existing contract to promote the Champions League.

The new deal covers the tournament from 2003-2006.
